The Rank Magic Blog
Cross Browser Compatibility
August
29, 2008 ::: In last month's blog, we wrote about
making sure your web site displays properly in all the popular browsers.
It's just not safe anymore to assume that everyone uses Internet Explorer.
Now there's a tool that will let you see exactly how your web pages
display in almost any browser you can imagine. You'll find it at
www.BrowserShots.org.
Don't get carried away, though. You can chose to see any page on your site
in dozens of browsers, but the process takes quite a bit of time and the
more browsers you choose, the longer it takes.
For priority service they request a donation, and that's a good idea if
you're a web designer working on multiple web sites. If you just want to
check your own site, though, the service is free as long as you don't mind a
little wait for the results.

Bill Hartzer's Search Engine Tip #1 - The Title Tag
August 22, 2008 ::: Bill Hartzer has
an excellent blog on search engine optimization (SEO, and he's started a
series of search engine tips that I think you'll find very valuable.
His
first tip deals with the single most powerful place for your keywords to
appear: the Page Title. The Page Title isn't what most people expect
... and it doesn't even "appear" on your web page. It displays in the title
bar of your browser (up near your browser logo at the very top left corner
of your browser window ... in the blue title bar). It's also used by all
search engines as the heading for your listing when you show up in the
search results.
The title tag is in the <HEAD> section of the HTML code for your web
page. A very common mistake we see on web sites happens when web designers
fail to pay attention to the title tag. We see pages that have a title of
"Home Page" or "New Page 1". A little less extreme are web sites where every
page displays only the company name in the title tag. Bill provides an easy
way for you to check all of your title tags and make sure they say what you
want them to say.
I recommend his article. Check it out.

August 15, 2008 ::: Matt Cutts is the
Google employee known as "The Google Guy", and he has a blog with insightful
information about how to rank highly in Google. In a recent interview, he
talks about ranking, search engine spam, and the future of search. Of
particular note are his thoughts on how small and very small businesses can
compete with "the big boys" on the Internet. Check out the video on the
Google Webmaster Central Blog.

Flash is Still Too Flashy for Competitive SEO
August
12, 2008 ::: It's great news that Flash is becoming more search
engine friendly and there is no question that the addition of previously
unattainable Flash content to search engine indexes will prove valuable. But
sadly I would never tell a client that Flash can be a competitive medium for
search engine optimization. There are simply too many roadblocks that still
exist and need to be addressed before a Flash website has any hope of
competing with an HTML website on the basis of search engine optimization.
An all-Flash web site is still essentially invisible to the search engines.

Get New Sites Ranked Quickly
August 3, 2008 ::: There's been a lot
of discussion lately about whether the Google Sandbox is a real phenomenon
or just an SEO myth. Regardless of that,
a
recent article in Search Engine Land promises to hold the key to getting
past that hurdle quickly.
- Use a less popular version of your keywords.
- Make judicious use of keyword modifiers.
- Mix up the keywords on your page. Use plural and singular
version, employ other variations, too.
- Try for long-tail versions of your keywords.
- Buy traffic if you need to.
