Search Engine
Submissions
Search engine submissions (or search engine registrations)
are helpful in getting your web site listed with
search engines. Search
engines are constantly looking for new and changed sites on the web, and
without search engine submissions, chances are your site will still get
listed. Eventually.
When you've made changes to your web site, especially
changes designed to achieve better search engine placement, you want the
search engines to know about that immediately. And the way to do that is
through search engine submissions.
One of the most prevalent
misconceptions perpetuated through spam (chances are you've received some of
those emails!) is that submitting your site to hundreds or thousands of
search engines will result in tons of new visitors to your website, ready to
buy what you sell. One of these bulk submission services promises to submit
your web site to 300,000 search engines!
Here's what they
don't tell you
- Many of the so-called "search
engines" they submit you to exist only to collect e-mail addresses for
spammers. That's NOT a good thing to happen to your email address! By
submitting, you are unknowingly giving your consent for them to email you.
- About 94% of search engine traffic
comes from just the top dozen or so search engines.
- Search engine submissions only get
your site
listed on the search engines. (In truth, that's all they offer to do.)
But if you don't appear near the top of the search engine results,
potential customers will never find you. If your non-optimized web site
comes up on page 73 of the search engine listings for a critical keyword,
no amount of search engine submissions will change that. And being listed
on page 73 provides absolutely no value to your business.
- Submitting alone is just not
enough.
The main benefit of search engine
submissions as part of a coordinated effort to achieve better search engine
results is that once you've optimized your web site for your chosen
keywords, you want the search engines to know about it right away. Time's
a-wasting!
However, it's important to do it
properly.
A few people avoid automated
submissions out of fear that the search engine will penalized them for using
an automated tool. It's true that search engines generally object to some
kinds of automated submissions because of the bandwidth it consumes on the
search engine's site. They understandably don't want their performance for
searches slowed down by automated submissions. Bulk submitters like the
firms discussed above are prime culprits.
Rank Magic
respects the search engine's legitimate interests in preserving their
bandwidth. For some search engines, we submit manually. For those where we
use an automated tool, we employ a tool that emulates a common browser so
that the submissions look exactly like manual submissions to the search
engines. Furthermore, we submit only a single page per day to each search
engine, so that the speed of the submission and the bandwidth consumed
becomes a non-issue.
